Dr. Frieda Badenhorst is a registered member of the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa). She practices as a general medical practitioner in Somerset West since 1991. She started practicing with an integrative healthcare approach in 1994. In 2002 she learned about Functional Medicine and gradually incorporated the principals of functional medicine; pursue searching for handling the root cause of symptoms and diseases through the Functional Medicine lens in her practice. Together with her husband, Dr. Carel Bredell, she runs a successful practice attending to a wide range of medical problems.

She obtained her MBChB at Stellenbosch University in 1980, after which she worked at Tygerberg Hospital for 4 years rotating through various departments as a Medical Officer.

In 1984 she moved to Uitenhage where she worked as a Medical Officer in the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital as well as attending to the District surgeon patients. During 1985 and 1986 she played an integral part in the ICU department of the hospital.

In 1987 she joined a private practice in Hermanus. She also worked in the Provincial Medical Clinics in Stanford, Hawston and Gansbaai. During this time the emphasis of her approach to medicine changed and she incorporated preventative medicine and attended to her patients’ needs to cope with life’s demands on a psychosocial level.

In Somerset West she and her husband included different complementary and alternative modalities to support their patients with an integrative approach.

Challenged by the desire to meet the needs of her patients she continued studying and did various courses in complementary and alternative therapies. In her practice she includes dietary, lifestyle and nutraceutical approaches to prevent and reverse chronic health conditions. Her knowledge rest on study modules from Functional Medicine, Functional nutrition, Bio regulatory medicine, Bio puncture and Biofeedback Energy Medicine.

For the last 18 years she has been extensively involved in the treatment of Allergy related disease processes, Chronic stress and Lifestyle diseases. Her special interest also includes the Gastrointestinal health, the Immune health and Auto-immune diseases. Her passion is to support preventing and reversing chronic health conditions, empower her patients with the knowledge needed to take responsibility for their own health and encourage the incorporation of health supporting changes and traits.

From 2011 to 2014 she was involved in tutoring in the Integrative Medicine online modules at Stellenbosh university and supported in compiling information for the Functional Medicine study guides. In 2013 she was invited to assist as Module coordinator for “Module 2: A Functional Approach to Integrative Medicine”.
